History

Welcome to Epsom’s oldest existing pub!

The white horse pub sign

Originally called the New Inn, the pub was mentioned in Samuel Pepys’ diary during one of his visits to Epsom in 1667. The purpose of Sir Samuel’s visit was to take water from the well that made Epsom a famous spa town in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries (this water is famous for its laxative qualities)!

The well is a short walk up the hill heading away from Epsom and is situated in the “Wells Estate”. The White Horse was also mentioned in a court circular in 1672 – so even back then it was being talked about in all the best places!

Architecturally the building is extremely unusual; the front is an 1830’s addition when the fashion was for flat roofs, hence the parapet around the front and sides that hides the roof.

The core of the pub remains the original timber-framed building, although there have been several later additions over the years.
